When we consider hotels we usually associate them with a short period of accommodation for which payment is required. In the past when in need of a hotel room someone could expected only elementary accommodation like a single bed in the room, a locker, a small desk, and a washing bowl. These days however you receive a room packed with modern life conveniences. Air conditioning has almost become the norm everywhere.

There are some more extra facilities available in modern day places of accommodation. They are telephones, televisions, safes, clocks and mini-bars packed with food and drinks Some other luxury comforts are bathrobes, slippers, Jacuzzi baths, varieties of pillows and twin sinks. Facilities like restaurants, swimming pools, business centers, gyms, childcare facilities, conference halls and event management services are often available as well.

Different countries actually offer different things pertaining to lodging. Some have laws that state meals must be provided to visitors within certain time periods. Private places may not have to do this though. In some countries the word hotel may refer to a restaurant of bar.

The word hotel has come from a French word meaning host. A hotel is a French townhouse. Some such places serve food as a routine arrangement. In most cases the rooms are numbered or in some cases named. The purpose is easy identification of rooms by the guests.

Different inns will have a variety of costs, functions, and can be of diverse sizes. There are categories that they can be placed under from upscale to limited service. Most places that offer accommodation are placed into a category so that people know what to expect.

You can be a guest in a hotel which is so unusual that it sometimes become a destination in itself. These have unique features inside or in the surrounding area. Some can be in a paradise of trees and plants, Many can be found around the world. Improbable places like old nuclear bunkers have been converted into hotels.

There are some unique places that are built in the shape of a very huge shoe. The tale of the old woman who lived in a shoe is said to be the inspiration for the concept. Most of the famous shoe-like places of accommodation are designed like a woman's dancing shoe. Cave hotels are also popular. These have been built in natural caves and have underground rooms. There is one hotel that has been built in the remnants of an opal mine. Underwater accommodation is also available nowadays where you have to scuba dive to reach your room.

Some of the places of accommodation have been built with rooms stacked onto one another. They are called capsules and are usually not very expensive as the rooms offer little space. Ice modeling has become so advanced that rooms can be modeled from it. The coming of spring however melts them but they are redone each winter.

Places to stay are as important as the destination when you plan a vacation. Bad hotels can drain the pleasure of a trip. Some searching can make sure you find a good place and ensure relaxing stay. There are indeed places that provide good services, at an affordable price.
